Media bias alive and sick in Newcastle

I’m sure many of you have wondered from time to time just how well we are served as citizens by our media.

We had a great example this weekend of the kind of media bias that so many citizens complain about.

If you read today’s Newcastle Herald you could be forgiven for thinking that the only candidate to launch an election campaign over the weekend was Bryce Gaudry.

The large colour panel story of Mr Gaudry’s launch dominated page 7 of today’s Herald. The story was accompanied by a large colour, captioned photograph of Mr Gaudry at the launch.

Newcastle Greens also launched our election campaign on Sunday (coincidentally at the same time as Mr Gaudry’s). This involved all six of our candidates, covering the electorates of Swansea, Lake Macquarie, Charlestown, Port Stephens, Wallsend and Newcastle.

The Herald didn’t even bother to send a journalist or photographer to this event (despite the fact that we notified them), and didn’t had a small mention as a box inside an article about Lake Macquarie.

We don’t begrudge Mr Gaudry the coverage he received, we just want some of the “fairness and balance” that the media is supposed to stand for.

The Herald seemed to find plenty of room for infotainment trivia about Kylie Minogue (page 3), and about six year old naked photos of John Howard’s potential daughter in law (page5).

C’mon Herald, Newcastle citizens deserve better than this!

[PS: The local ABC station (1233) covered our launch on its news service].
